Association between Age at Natural Menopause and Prevalence of Obesity, Hypertension, Diabetes, and Hypercholesterolemia

Abstract

|
Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the association between age at natural menopause and prevalence of obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and hypercholesterolemia among Korean women.
Methods: A total of 4,485 naturally menopausal women aged older than 40 years were selected from the 7th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016 to 2018). The participants were divided into 4 groups by age at natural menopause (<45, 45-49, 50-54, and ≥55 years). A logistic regression analysis of complex survey was conducted to identify whether prevalence of each chronic disease was related to age at natural menopause.
Results: The mean menopause age was 49.9 years. There were significant associations between age of menopause and prevalence of obesity (P=0.001) and hypertension (P<0.001). However, after adjustment for age, socio-demographic factors (household income, duration of education, and marital status), health behavior factors (smoking, drinking, and physical activity), and reproductive factors (menarche age, number of pregnancies, first and last delivery age, total breastfeeding duration, and oral contraceptive use) only prevalence of obesity was significantly associated with age at natural menopause (P=0.016). The prevalence of obesity was highest in the group whose menopause age was older than 55 years.
Conclusions: There was a significant association between age at natural menopause and prevalence of obesity. Unexpectedly, there was no statistically significant association between age of natural menopause and prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, and hypercholesterolemia.
